Idoia studied a BSc in Biomedical Sciences at Maastricht University, during which she investigated cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurovascular development. She then completed an MSc in Reproductive and Developmental Biology at Imperial College London, where she used Metabolomics to analyse serum lipid alterations in two liver-related pregnancy complications.

She joined the Francis Crick Institute in 2022 as a joint Crick-Imperial PhD student, co-supervised by Dr Ben Schumann, Dr Yan Liu, and Dr Beth Holder. Her research aims to elucidate biochemical mechanisms involved in pregnancy, by investigating the role of glycans found on the surface of extracellular vesicles in the placenta.
